Club National
As part of the National Dry Slope Circuit, a number of clubs around the country host a series of Club Nationals. The full schedule can be found at www.britski.org.Citizen/Echo report on the 2007 Gloucester Club National
Over 150 top British ski racers recently descended on Robinswood Hill for Gloucester Ski Club's annual Club National Race. The all day event began with an unexpected fly past by the Red Arrows and featured some very close and exciting racing on a technical slalom course set by Gloucester's experienced Performance Coach, Hedley Beavis.
On a beautiful summer’s day, the minis (under 10's) raced first, with Gloucester's Oliver Stokes winning the boys event in a combined time of 27.78 seconds. In the girl’s event, Beatrice Martin-Harrington narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in her first ever national race. Oli won Native’s “Most Promising Young Racer” award two years ago and is now living up to his potential, having medalled in most national level races this year.
The male race was contested by one of the strongest fields seen at Gloucester in recent years and they produced some truly gripping racing. Cardiff Ski Club's Andrew Watson (16) took the win in 21.64 seconds with an on-form Alasdair Holbourn coming very close to medalling for Gloucester.
In the female race, a field of 49 skiers aged between ten and 53 were dominated by Gloucester Ski Club, who raced to three of the top five places. 18 year old Rowan Vernon won with a time of 23.74 seconds with Emily Goddard (19) coming third. Rowan and Emily are both ranked at the very top of the sport and last year represented England and Wales respectively in the National and European Championships. Rowan has also recently become a valuable member of the Gloucester coaching team and is passing on her experience to the up and coming racers.
Gloucester Head Coach, Ian Blair, was delighted to see such a high class race at Gloucester this year. "It is fantastic to see racers who have been with the club for many years getting the results that they deserve, and I am equally pleased that Gloucester Ski Club has the talent available to enter 26 skiers in a national race, some of whom will undoubtedly be stars of the future. Our youngest racers are seven years old and have a rare opportunity to train with some of the best skiers in the country. Gloucester Ski Club would also like to thank everyone involved in organising the race and all the racers who participated.”
